Helen Knowles - Birth Rites Curator

Helen is a director of the Birth Rites Collection - a collection of contemporary art on the subject of childbirth located in Salford University midwifery department and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London. She established the collection in 2009 following her curatorial work on the Birth Rites Exhibition which opened at the Glasgow Science Centre and toured to the Manchester Museum in 2008. Here she oversaw five high profile collaborations between artists and childbirth professionals to produce work for the touring show. Artists she worked with included Hermione Wiltshire, Head of Photography at the RCA, Chinese Swiss artist Ping Qiu. She has overseen high profile events including; Birth Rites Symposia (2011) at The Whitechapel and Whitworth Art Galleries and Matrix (2007) at the Victoria Baths in Manchester. In 2012 Helen interviewed Judy Chicago whilst in America to bring back two gifts of work donated to the collection from Chicago's 1980's birth project. Helen is currently a British Council, Young Creative Entrepreneur.  In 2002 I worked with the Tactical Arts Collective to put on Agitate, at teh Great Northern in Manchester. Following this curatorial collaboration I went on to work with Jay Redman of the UHC Collective to co-curate Don't Cross the Line.
